JOE JOGIA WITHDRAWS FROM SHOOT-OUT

Joe Jogia has withdrawn from his Snooker Shoot-Out match against Matthew Selt in Blackpool on Saturday with a leg injury.

The match is the subject of an investigation by the sport's governing body the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) after a bookmaker reported it had been the subject of unusual betting patterns.
It is understood an unusually large number of small bets were placed on Selt to win the match with various bookmakers.
World Snooker confirmed that Jogia had withdrawn from the tournament on medical grounds, and he will now be replaced by Rod Lawler in the match against Selt.
WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson said the investigation into the match by the association's Integrity Unit would continue.
"I have spoken to Joe on a couple of occasions. He has confirmed that he has a leg injury which I'm aware that other people are aware of," said Ferguson.
"His withdrawal is on medical grounds and he will have to present a doctor's note to us following his withdrawal from the event." - http://www.sportinglife.com/

Hawkins seals Shoot-Out win

Left-hander sees off former world champ Dott in Blackpool final

Barry Hawkins clinched the 2012 Snooker Shoot-Out crown after overcoming former world champion Graeme Dott in Sunday's final.

The 32-year-old from Kent received a cheque for £32,000 for coming out on top in the 10-minute battle, with his opening break of 46 enough to give him a lead he would not surrender.

Hawkins had booked his place in the final with a win over veteran Dave Harrold, while Dott - who won at the Crucible in 2004 - saw off Leicester's Tom Ford in another tight semi-final.

"I'm not used to being a champion. It's only one frame but it's still a win," Hawkins told Sky Sports afterwards.

"Even at 50 in front with two minutes left I was worried but I'm delighted. I'm getting married in the summer so the money will come in handy!"

Hawkins had earlier made a break of 55 as he took on Harold in the first-semi-final, with the Stoke veteran running out of time as he lost 56-30.

Scotsman Dott has looked in control against Ford as he made a break of 51 before missing an easy black.

Ford looked to have the match in his grasp as he responded with 31, but missed a black off the spot to hand the match to Dott.

Londoner Martin Gould claimed the £2,000 prize for the highest break of the tournament - a superb 135 in his third-round clash with Jamie Jones. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Big names crash in Blackpool

Higgins, Selby, Williams all defeated in Shootout

Several big names lost on day two of the PartyPoker.com Snooker Shootout in Blackpool on Saturday.

World champion John Higgins was among those missing out, falling to Mark Allen in the final match of the night.

The quickfire matches whittled the competition down to just 16 by the end of the day, with Higgins going down 67-34 after Allen took control with a decisive break of 55.

World number one Mark Selby was also sent packing in a scrappy match with Dominic Dale, who was a 31-22 winner after Selby botched a tricky red in the closing minute.

The well-fancied world number two Mark Williams suffered a similar fate, beaten 50-28 by Barry Pinches following a match-winning break worth 45.

Former world champion Stephen Hendry was beaten 69-30 by Gerard Greene after apparently forgetting a rule about safety shots having to hit cushions, with a similar problem seemingly accounting for Matthew Selt, who was defeated 63-39 by Tom Ford.

Liang Wenbo, the only remaining non-Briton in the competition, will be confident of his chances after a controlled break saw him claim a 54-0 success over Matthew Stevens.

Stephen Lee will also be in high spirits as he heads into the last 16 after he compiled the only century of the weekend so far in his 121-6 beating of Ricky Walden.

Other winners included Jamie Jones, Dave Harold, Mark Davis, Stephen Maguire, Graeme Dott, Robert Milkins, Ryan Day, Barry Hawkins and Martin Gould. - http://www1.skysports.com/

SNOOKER news update 1/24

NEIL ROBERTSON believes he has had the last laugh on Judd Trump, who criticised him for being “boring” and “slow” last week.

Australian Robertson sealed a first Masters title with a 10-6 win over Shaun Murphy, his seventh win in as many major finals.

And a cheque for £150,000 at Alexandra Palace was the perfect answer to 22-year-old UK champion Trump, who has slammed the world No4’s style.

Former world champion Robertson, 29, denied the claims and is targeting more controversy-free Crucible glory, after his 18-13 win over Graeme Dott in 2010 came in a poor final which ended at 1am.

He said: “I can deal with being called slow if I’m picking up the winner’s cheque. You don’t get paid by the hour in snooker.

“I can’t play quite as quickly as Judd Trump, Ronnie O’Sullivan and even Shaun, but I’m not slow at all. This makes up for some of what happened in my world title win – you can’t help it when there’s not a fantastic final.” - http://www.express.co.uk

No let-up for Robertson

Masters champion has no time to celebrate win

New BGC Masters champion Neil Robertson will be straight back into action on Monday - just hours after winning the second most prestigious title of his career.

The 2010 world champion celebrated saw off Shaun Murphy 10-6 in Sunday's Masters final at Alexandra Palace.

However the Australian must now compete in a minor two-day event in Essex after a request to World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn to take Monday off as a reward for his triumph fell on deaf ears.

"I asked Barry if I could have the day off because I'm supposed to be going to Crondon Park to play in the Championship League," Robertson said.

"My match is at 11am against Mark Davis. He probably thinks I won't turn up!

"I asked Barry if I could have the day off and he said no chance, you've got to work! I'll try my best."

Murphy paid his opponent a major compliment by comparing him favourably to all-time great John Higgins.- http://www1.skysports.com

Robertson to face Murphy

Aussie inspired by boorish crowd behaviour

Neil Robertson put his frustrations with the crowd to one side as he beat Judd Trump 6-3 to reach the final of the BGC Masters.

The Australian, who will face Shaun Murphy in Sunday's title decider, was annoyed by cheers from fans when Trump fluked shots but said afterwards that the incidents simply acted as inspiration.

"If anything it made me play better," Robertson told BBC Sport. "It's disappointing because Judd is a fantastic lad and he is nothing like those guys."

In what was a scrappy match, it was Robertson who took his chances the better.

Robertson raced into a 2-0 lead but a 76 break from Trump in frame three saw him get on the scoreboard.
Robertson took the next with a run of 89 and when he edged the fifth frame and grabbed the sixth he held a 5-1 advantage,.

Trump raised hopes of a miraculous comeback by winning two frames in a row but a missed blue in what turned out to be the final frame proved costly.

Robertson admitted he was surprised Trump kept going for his shots rather than adapting his style of play.
"It was interesting because he kept going for it and going for it. I thought I played really good match play snooker and thankfully he missed a couple today."

Murphy was never headed as he played some sparkling snooker to beat world champion John Higgins 6-4.
The man from Rotherham made three centuries but the match looked to be heading for decider before Higgins missed the final pink along the rail.

That left Murphy a simple long pot with the pink over the pocket, which he duly despatched to set up a meeting with Robertson. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Trump brings down Rocket

Young pretender hammers former world champion in north London

Judd Trump booked his place in the semi-finals of the BGC Masters with a 6-2 victory over Ronnie O'Sullivan at Alexandra Palace.

The game's rising star surged into a 4-0 interval lead and although O'Sullivan reeled off a tournament best 141 after the break Trump remained on top.

O'Sullivan failed to live up to the promise of his first-round win over reigning champion Ding Junhui, but the inexorable rise of Trump continues with Neil Robertson or Mark Williams awaiting in the final four.
The match got off to a scrappy start with neither player able to find their rhythm, but the frame eventually went the way of Trump with a 39.

O'Sullivan's safety play let him down in the next to open the way for Trump to rattle off an assured break that broke down at 66. O'Sullivan attempted to play on but a missed red spelled the end of his efforts as Trump moved 2-0 ahead. - http://www1.skysports.com

Higgins into last eight

World champion more at home at new venue, Robertson also through

John Higgins eased into the quarter-finals of the Masters with a 6-2 victory over Matthew Stevens.

The world champion won the event twice at Wembley but Alexandra Palace is hosting the event after 32 years at the former venue.

And Higgins admitted he was more at home at 'Ally Pally' after winning his first round match in front of 1,500 spectators.

"At Wembley Conference Centre I was totally overawed, it was the biggest arena you can play in, with 2,500 people," he said. "Sometimes I went there and froze and just couldn't play.

"Even though I won it a couple of times there, I would only say I played really well against O'Sullivan in the 2006 final. The first time I won it I just scrapped through every match.

"Bringing it here is a master stroke because it generates a much better atmosphere.

"Ronnie O'Sullivan's match was a sell-out, and then Judd Trump is the next box office player, he had a great crowd. But all the matches, even today for us two boring old guys, it was a good crowd as well."

The Scot's highest break of 90 came in the opener before Stevens levelled despite a run of 45 being brought to a halt by a kick.

Higgins then scraped a 3-1 lead at the interval only for the Welshman to hit back again with a break of 65.

But the 36-year-old reeled off the next three frames, a break of 69 in the penultimate proving the highlight. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Trump sets up O'Sullivan showdown

Left-hander rolled in two centuries on way to victory over Bingham

Judd Trump set up a Masters quarter-final with Ronnie O'Sullivan after a scrappy 6-3 victory over Stuart Bingham in the first round at Alexandra Palace.

The 22-year-old from Bristol managed two centuries in the best-of-11-frame contest but his quickfire style all too often gave way to errors that Australian Open champion Bingham was quick to capitalise on.

Bingham led 3-2 at one stage but UK champion Trump stepped up his game with the pressure on, picking up four frames in a row to take the victory.

A typically outlandish red by Trump started the scoring and the world number eight looked at ease as he compiled a confident 87 in the opener.

"I'll have to improve probably 50 per cent if I want to beat Ronnie - I cannot give him those chances I was giving Stuart."Judd Trump Quotes of the week

Bingham looked nervy at the start of the second, his missed long red a gift for Trump but he made just 19 before a hasty blue paved the way for Bingham to hit a 69 and pull level. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Murphy marches through

Former world champion hits top break so far in Masters win

Shaun Murphy found some of his best form to breeze past martin Gould 6-2 at the Masters and move into the quarter-finals.

The Englishman joined Judd Trump as a winner on Monday as he hit two centuries at the Alexandra Palace and laid a marker down for the highest tournament break prize this week.

The former world champion knocked in a brilliant 139 to clinch the match and stand in the box seat for the £15,000 highest break bonus on offer as well as put in the performance of the Masters so far.

Gould himself had started well with a century break of his own to take the opening frame of the match, but it drew a stinging response from Murphy who rattled off the next four frames including a break of 107.

Gould did stop the rot with a break of 79 getting his second frame on the board, but Murphy was in the groove and duly got up to land runs of 89 and that 139 to set up a last-eight clash with either Mark Selby or Stephen Lee. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Sizzling century seals victory for the Rocket

Defending champion Ding Junhui fell at the first hurdle in the BGC Masters at Alexandra Palace, losing 6-4 to four-time former champion Ronnie O'Sullivan.

O'Sullivan thrilled a packed crowd in the first match played at the tournament's new home after its move from Wembley, claiming the final two frames to win 6-4 and finishing off with a classy 125.

O'Sullivan had led 4-1 and looked to be cruising through to the quarter-finals, but Ding's fightback began with a fluked red and he levelled the match.

But a break of 51 helped the crowd's favourite to regain the lead before the closing century put an impressive seal on his success.

Ding lost the opening frame despite making a break of 58, and errors from the Chinese player handed O'Sullivan the second too.

It looked like being 3-0 when O'Sullivan went 48-0 ahead in the next frame, but Ding was allowed back to the table and cut into that lead before returning to pot a superb long red and sufficient colours. - http://www1.skysports.com/

Trump to stay on the attack

In-form left-hander eyeing more success at the Masters

Trump admits he "lacked that killer edge" in front of the television cameras during the early years of his career, which delayed his transition from bright prospect to the champion he was always expected to become.

He has made only one prior appearance at the Masters, which moves from its traditional Wembley home this year, and it was a fleeting visit, losing in the wild-card round to Mark Allen in 2009.

It was Allen that Trump beat in York last December to land the UK Championship title and a £100,000 cheque.

Now he is aiming for Masters glory, and the £150,000 top prize, and said: "I'm looking to go a long way in the tournament and get back the buzz that I had at the UK. Being in a big final is completely different to any other match, it's just a great feeling and brilliant atmosphere." -  http://www1.skysports.com/

Ali Carter considering retirement after World Snooker Championship

Ali Carter has said he is considering retiring from the sport after the World Snooker Championship.

The former world number two last won a ranking tournament at theShanghai Masters in September 2010.

The 32-year-old says his lack of form and battle with Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel condition, means that it is hard to stay motivated.

"Snooker is part of my life, but it's a part of my life I'm not enjoying any more," Carter told BBC Sport.

"I'm not really enjoying being a snooker player at the moment at all. That's for many different reasons but I'll wait and see how things are at the end of the season for me."

Carter was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2003, a condition with symptoms similar to ulcerative colitis, which prompted Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcherto announce an indefinite break from football in December.

"My health is a big issue with my Crohn's disease and all the travelling and going abroad all the time makes it even more difficult to control," added Carter.

"But I'm in a fortunate position where I've achieved and won a few tournaments so I'll wait and see what my options are."

The former Welsh Open winner exited the first two ranking events of 2011, the Australian Open and the Shanghai Masters, in the first round.

At the 2011 UK Championships, he beat Robert Milkins, but then lost 6-2 to Mark Allen in the last 16 - prompting Carter to threaten to retire on Twitter stating: "I'm going to retire at the end of the season! And I can't wait!"

The Essex-born player reached the World Championship final as recently as 2008 - losing 18-8 to Ronnie O'Sullivan - but believes now could be the right time to change his career path.

"You know, 15 years ago, all I wanted to be was a snooker player and now, 15 years later, all I want to be is not a snooker player, so that needs looking at," Carter said.

"If I don't enjoy something, I'm not going to do it. I haven't got the will in me at the moment to do well.

"I'll see where I am in the rankings, see what position I'm in, see how I am mentally and physically and go from there." - http://news.bbc.co.uk/

Selby records three wins

Mark Selby is on course to reach the play-off stages of Championship League Snooker after recording three Group Two wins at Crondon Park Golf Club.

World number one Selby made breaks of 68 and 70 on his way to beating Shaun Murphy 3-1 before downing Mark Davis 3-1. He rounded off a worthwhile day with a 3-2 win over Matthew Stevens that included a closing break of 77.
Stuart Bingham, Mark Davis and Shaun Murphy all enjoyed two wins from their three matches, but 2011 champion Matthew Stevens is heading for the exit door after four straight losses.
Each group features seven players with each man playing the other six once in a round-robin basis. Every match is the best of five and the winner gaining a point. At the end of the league phase the top four advances to that group's semi-finals where the two winners meet in the final.
Players are awarded £100 per frame in the round robin stages, and this increases to £300 per frame for the play-offs. In addition, £3,000 goes to the play-off winner, £2,000 to the runner up and £1,000 each to the two semi-finalists.

HEARN TALKS ROUND ALLEN

World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn believes he has won over Mark Allen after a "frank and friendly" discussion with the UK Championship runner-up.

Allen has been unhappy to see the format of tournaments changed since Hearn took charge of the professional game two years ago, and expressed his fear that the World Championship would be the next to have an overhaul.

Northern Irishman Allen also claimed Hearn was in snooker simply "to make money for himself" and had no interest in player welfare, and argued "the whole tradition of the game is going to pot".

Hearn said at the time he would take legal advice but has dropped any thoughts of suing 25-year-old Allen.

Discussing the talks he held with Allen, Hearn told BBC Sport: "We had a good meeting and the chat we had was good at opening his mind as to where he wants to be. - http://www.sportinglife.com/

Snooker's World Open will be staged in the city of Haikou on Hainan Island in China for the next five years.

The world ranking tournament will now be known as the Haikou World Open and take place from February 27 to March 4.

The world's top 16 players are automatically seeded into the event - with a further 16 players coming through the qualifying rounds, which run from January 11 to 14. There will also be eight wild cards at the final venue.

World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn said: "We are delighted to announce the staging of the World Open in Haikou for the next five years.

"The popularity of snooker in China continues to grow at a phenomenal rate and we have capitalised on that by establishing a third full ranking event, alongside the China Open and Shanghai Masters.

"We expect to make more announcements about events in China in the coming weeks.

"Hainan Island is one of the most beautiful places on earth and an ideal place to stage one of our world ranking tournaments. The players competing in the event are in for a wonderful time and it's fantastic to be taking snooker to a new part of China.

"I have no doubt that the fans there will show the same passion and enthusiasm for our sport that we have seen at our other tournaments in China." - http://www1.skysports.com

Maguire ends trophy drought

Scot has Christmas off and returns with an overdue victory

Stephen Maguire won a ranking event for the first time in nearly four years by beating Joe Perry 4-2 in the final of Players Tour Championship event 12 in Munich.

The world No 9 went 2-0 up with breaks of 105 and 77, before Perry pulled one back with a 63.

Maguire fired in a 93 to lead 3-1, and after Perry had won frame five with a 75, the Scot finished off a high quality final with a run of 62 to win frame six and the match.

Victory for Maguire ends a run of 45 months without winning an event carrying ranking points, since the 2008 China Open in Beijing.

Maguire had been forced to come from 2-0 and 3-2 down to edge out fellow Scot Stephen Hendry 4-3 in the semi-finals. Online betting Hendry was off to a fast start with breaks of 98 and 105, but Maguire took the third frame on the colours and added a 74 for 2-2.

Hendry regained the lead before Maguire levelled again with another 74 before dominating a scrappy decider and winning it 45-1.

Perry, meanwhile, had stormed to a 4-0 win over Martin Gould to reach his second PTC final of the season. The Chatteris cueman made a 43 clearance to nick the first frame on the black, and cleared again in the second with 49.

Runs of 62 and 66 helped him add the next two frames and complete the victory. - http://www1.skysports.com

Stevens delighted by Masters return

Welshman fights his way back into the world's top 16

Matthew Stevens is thrilled to be back at The Masters later this month after a five year absence.

Welshman Stevens won the tournament back in 2000, beating Ken Doherty 10-8 in the final. But he dropped out of the world's top 16 in 2007, therefore missing out on the Masters, which is an exclusive invitational tournament for the sport's elite players.

But Stevens has now regained his top 16 berth and can't wait to take to the stage again against John Higgins and compete for the £150,000 top prize, with the event starting at Alexandra Palace on January 15.

"It's one of the tournaments all the top players want to be in," he said. "I've not been involved in it for a few years so it's great to be back. The event gets such a massive audience on TV and in the arena so it just feels really special.

"I'm sure Alexandra Palace will be completely different to Wembley so it's a fresh start for all the players. I've watched the darts at Ally Pally on TV - it looks like a really good venue with a great atmosphere.

"Being back in the top 16 has made a massive difference for me. With all the new tournaments the calendar is very busy, so if I had to go to the qualifiers as well it would be a lot tougher.

"I'm winning matches that I was losing before, just the odd 5-4 here and there, but when you add those up it makes a big difference."

Stevens will turn 35 this year and it's seven years since he reached the second of his two World Championship finals. But he believes he has plenty of time to add to his haul of trophies.

"I still feel as if I've got a lot of good years ahead of me in the game," he said. "My eyes aren't going and I'm in decent nick. Hopefully I'll still be playing at a high level when I'm 40 and beyond." -http://www1.skysports.com/
