Judd Trump thrilled by successful year

Judd Trump believes his growing confidence helped him to victory in the UK Championship final.
Sunday's 10-8 win over Mark Allen capped off a remarkable year for the Bristolian who won the China Open and was runner-up at the Crucible.
"It is just confidence really," the 22-year-old, who rose two places to number five in the world, told BBC Sport.
"I'm getting more table time and match practice. I'm more comfortable playing on TV. It's starting to pay off."

Trump went into the second session of the best-of-19 final with an 8-3 lead but saw that advantage reduced to 9-8 as Allen fought back with a brilliant break-building display.
"After I lost in the World Championship [final] I was just happy to come to another big event and play well. But to win it in the way I did is a brilliant achievement," Trump added.
"Mark pushed me all the way and it was a good job I had a big lead in the end.
"It's probably the best anyone has ever played against me. I was just sat there hoping he would miss but he didn't. I just had to force a mistake and luckily I took my chance. Hopefully there is more to come."
Trump collected a winning prize of £100,000 which brought his year's earnings to more than £350,000.
Allen, who earlier in the week criticised World Snooker chief Barry Hearn for changing the format of the event, paid tribute to the new UK champion.

"I knew it was going to be hard the way he was playing, Judd was as good as I think I have ever seen anyone," said the 2010 semi-finalist.
"He scores so heavily and so quickly and I didn't feel I did much wrong but Judd was just a bit too good.
"I felt really good and I was just hoping for a chance in the last frame but Judd showed just what a good champion he is and I'm sure it is the icing on the cake for him.
"The crowd has been brilliant all week and I'm obviously disappointed to lose but sometimes you have to say your opponent is the better player and Judd was just that."- http://news.bbc.co.uk/

Controversy of the Year: Mark Allen's rants

Off the baize, Allen was just as entertaining as he was on it, with him seemingly intent on taking on O'Sullivan for the most column inches outside of the actual snooker matches themselves.

News firstly grew of the rising tension between Allen and Stuart Bingham, who he accused of having no bottle after losing at the Crucible and revealing a serious rivalry between the pair. It backfired on Allen, though, as a fired-up Bingham beat him in a grudge match at the Australian Goldfields Open before going on to claim his first ranking event.

Allen then aimed his fury at Barry Hearn at the UK Championships. After the snooker chief had slightly shortened the early-round matches, a furious Allen called for him to resign for breaking a promise not to tinker with snooker's biggest events.

Some ill-placed swearing got Allen in trouble, and he later appeared at a press conference with tape over his mouth, but he refused to go back on his statement that: "The players don't really matter, so **** the players."

Allen faces a disrepute charge for swearing and his comments against Hearn. - htp://www.sportinglife.com

Year to Remember: John Higgins

It was a year of redemption for Higgins after his six-month ban in 2010 during the notorious match-fixing betting sting.

2011 was a sad year for Higgins as his father passed away after a long battle with cancer, and it made for an emotional return to winning ways as the Scotsman won the Welsh Open soon after and dedicated that victory to his late father. After his much-publicised troubles 12 months earlier, Higgins was determined to show what he can do as he returned to the Crucible, but fans remained divided and he was heckled during the semi-finals by an angry spectator. Higgins did not lose focus though, and beat Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Williams and eventually Judd Trump in the final to stand fourth on the list of all-time winners behind Stephen Hendry, Ray Reardon and Steve Davis. - http://www.sportinglife.com

Year to Forget: Ronnie O'Sullivan

'The Rocket' seems to have run out of steam this year - he is now without a ranking event title since 2009 and is in serious danger of slipping out of the top 16 in the world rankings.

The three-time world champion may have continued his dominance of the Premier League, but there are no ranking points available for that event and results elsewhere have not been enough to keep up with the rest of the world's best.

O'Sullivan has again threatened to walk away from snooker, once at the start of the year and again after losing to Trump at the UK Championship in December, whilst also voicing his angry opinion of the smaller PTC events that carry ranking points.

With little interest in playing in those smaller events, O'Sullivan would certainly not fancy a return to the qualifying scene for the major events and should he slip out of the top 16 he may well carry out his threat to hang up his cue.

A row about him being paid appearance money also soured the year, with 'The Rocket' insisting he deserved extra for being the only crowd puller in the sport, but with Trump and Allen leading a new breed of exciting young potters O'Sullivan may soon find himself just among the also-rans. - http://www.sportinglife.com

Player of the Year: Judd Trump

Finally, Judd Trump made the huge breakthrough into snooker that everyone thought he would ever since his days of dominating the youth game. We say finally, but the Bristol left-hander is still only 22 and could be the dominant force of the future.

Trump has had a few good results over the last few years, but 2011 was a huge step in terms of consistency, and from making his first ranking final to winning his first event and making the Crucible final, Trump ends the year fifth in the world rankings.

It all kicked off for Trump at the China Open when he reached his first ranking event final, and duly disposed of Mark Selby in a thrilling 10-8 victory to claim his first ranking event trophy, showing the flamboyant potting and nerveless composure that could make him a huge star for years to come.

Off next to the Crucible, where Trump produced a wonderful performance to dump defending world champion Neil Robertson out of the tournament in the first round, before storming all the way to the final.

Higgins proved just too good for him, but Trump responded by claiming the second-biggest title, the UK Championship, in December, beating O'Sullivan along the way, to end a magnificent year in a style befitting a man leading the new generation in snooker. - http://www.sportinglife.com

Cope keeps 147 run going in Sheffield

Jamie Cope fired snooker's fourth 147 in four days on his way to the last 16 of PTC 11 in Sheffield.

Cope had the effort during his 4-3 round three victory over Kurt Maflin and also needed a 111 to take care of the Norwegian. It was the third maximum of Cope's career and he joins Matthew Stevens and Ding Junhui (twice) in firing a maximum at the World Snooker Academy this week. He will next face UK champion Judd Trump who beat Alan McManus 4-2.On the day that the bottom half of the PTC 11 draw played to the round of 16, Mark Selby was arguably the most impressive performer and he won all three of his matches 4-0, including a success against Mark Williams in the third round. He will now play Graeme Dott in the last 16.- http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/

FORD READY TO TAKE ON THE BEST

Tom Ford believes he has the confidence to beat snooker's top players after edging out Martin Gould 4-3 in the final of PTC11 in Sheffield.

Leicester's 28-year-old Ford won PTC3 last year and captured the second professional title of his career on Monday with victory in this season's penultimate short PTC event.

Gould won the first frame on the black before world No 31 Ford took the next two with breaks of 66 and 60. Back came Gould to 2-2 then he knocked in a 127 to take the lead.

But Ford dominated the sixth frame for 3-3, then came from 41-8 down to win the decider with a calm 66 clearance.

"We were both shaky at first, but when we settled down we were winning frames in one visit," said Ford after picking up the 10,000 Euro top prize.

"I made a good break in the last frame, particularly the last red along the top cushion because I knew if I missed it I'd lose. I came here expecting nothing, but after winning my first match I got stronger."

Ford stunned snooker's man of the moment, Judd Trump, 4-1 in the quarter-finals, and also beat former world champion Graeme Dott 4-0 in the semis. - http://www.sportinglife.com

UK Snooker Championship: Judd Trump beats Mark Allen to win title

Rising star Judd Trump beat Northern Ireland's Mark Allen 10-8 to clinch his first UK Championship title in York.

The Englishman won the opening frame but Allen rattled off three in a row including a stunning break of 141.

Trump, 22, responded with runs of 52, 62, 75 and 61 to move 5-3 up and breaks of 109, 78 and 74 on the resumption made it seven consecutive frames.

From 8-3 down Allen won five of the next six, including three more tons, but Trump sealed it with a break of 91.

"It's a brilliant feeling and it's been a brilliant week," Trump, who rises two places to number five in the world rankings, told BBC Sport.

"After I lost in the World Championship [final] I was just happy to come to another big event and play well. But to win it in the way I did is a brilliant achievement. Mark pushed me all the way and it was a good job I had a big lead in the end.

THEOPHANE RETAINS BRITISH TITLE

Ashley Theophane stopped Ben Murphy in the 11th round to retain his British light-welterweight title on Saturday night.

Theophane struggled to hold off the aggressive Murphy in the opening six rounds and was trailing on all the judges' cards when he finally found the punches to halt the brave challenger.

Murphy charged straight at Theophane from the first bell and the Londoner was forced to cover up for the much of the first two rounds as his pumped-up opponent dug in body shots.

The Sussex man's relentless assaults were clearly unsettling Theophane, who shipped more hooks to head and body in the third, but 'Treasure' showed his class with a crisp right hook in the sixth.

More spiteful hooks left Murphy with a cut eye in the seventh round and he was stopped in his tracks by a flurry from Theophane in the eighth.

Murphy was finally starting to tire and body shots appeared to drain his battling spirit in the 10th before a sustained attack from Theophane in the 11th forced the referee to step in. - http://www.sportinglife.com

JUDD TRUMP THROUGH TO UK FINAL

Judd Trump managed to stay awake amid stifling tactics from Neil Robertson to reach his first williamhill.com UK Championship final.

And now there is the prospect of snooker's new superstar ending his breakthrough year on a dazzling high.

Trump shot to prominence with his heroics at the World Championship where he first eliminated 2010 winner Robertson on the opening day before pushing John Higgins all the way in the final.

Again Trump had Robertson's number in York as he booked a place in Sunday's title match.

Trump has already pocketed £250,000 in a terrific 12 months, and he remained mentally alert as Robertson went on a desperate survival mission.

From 7-5 behind Robertson clawed himself back to level terms, before Trump pulled away to win 9-7.

Trump said: "I think Neil tried to slow it down and make things awkward for me. The game went really slow and nothing happened for about 20 minutes and I was just sitting there falling asleep. He came back to seven-all and I thought he could win from there. - http://www.sportinglife.com
